Native to northern Europe, hawthorn (Crataegus) can be found sporting lush white flowers from May to June. As the summer progresses, it is its bright red fruits that take center stage. Along with the flowers, its pointed thorns distributed throughout the branches give this plant its name.

Flavonoids are the most important compounds that can be found both in the leaves and in the fruits of hawthorn. Along with them, iron and folic acid (folates) have been added to hawthorn capsules.
