Chitosan can bind fat up to five or six times its own weight. It acts as a fat sponge with a positive ionic value that can capture the chemical fats and lipids with negative values. The resulting combination of fat and chitosan cannot be absorbed by the digestive system, so that the captured fat leaves the body undigested and does not enter the organism. Therefore chitosan is often referred to as a fat trap. When less fat is available for the organism, the body draws the necessary fat from its fat reserves, the so called fat pads at the stomach, thighs and hips, which automatically leads to a loss of weight. For chitosan to work properly, it is recomended to drink between 2 and 3 liters of liquid a day, like water or tea. Pregnant woman and nursing mothers should not take chitosan, nor people who are allergic to shell fish.
